How to Install a Tankless Water Heater Pressure Relief Valve

Well, it goes without saying that the pressure valves are an essential component of a tankless water heater.

The primary function of a valve is to help you manually release air from the heating chamber during the process of filling the latter with water for the first time.

Even during periodic maintenance, a pressure relief valve plays a crucial role.

We highly recommend our clients should include a PVC pipe as a discharge line irrespective of whether they are installing a new indoor or outdoor tankless water heater.

It's good to have PVC pipe as a discharge line even in the case of replacing a pressure-release valve.

I know quite a few of my readers would be inquisitive to know that about the exact time of a pressure-release valve installation, right?

In almost every case, a pressure release valve is installed after the heater is mounted in place and the water lines are connected.

Enough of the JAGRAN, let's dive straight into the steps.

Steps

The below-mentioned steps will do the trick for you.

  • First and foremost, you need to wrap two layers of vinyl plumber's tape around the threads on the pressure release valve
  • Make sure that you're wrapping the TAPE in the direction the threads screw into the port on the water heater for the best results
  • Once you're done with the aforementioned steps, the next thing that you need to do is to screw the valve into the port on the lower edge of the tankless heater by hand
  • You would be needing an adjustable wrench to fit onto the flat portion of the valve and tighten it into the clockwise direction
  • Make sure that you've stopped once the valve is reasonable tight, don't put external unwanted pressure on the valve
  • During the process, the pressure-release lever should face towards the outer edge of the tank
  • Now, wrap plumber's tape around the threads of a 3/4 inch thread-to-slip PVC connector
  • Screw the thread end clockwise into the open port at the lower side of the pressure release valve
  • Tighten the connector snugly with adjustable pliers
  • The distance between the lower end of the connector and floor or ground needs to be measured
  • Then, you need to deduct 4 to 5 inches in order to allow clearance for an overflow pan at the lower end of the discharge line
  • Cut a piece of 3/4 inch PVC pipe to length with PVC cutters or a hacksaw
  • Remove burr from the cut end with a file
  • You need to insert one end of the discharge line into the opening at the slip by holding the pressure-release valve with one end
  • Another thing that you can do is to unthread end of the connector
  • Lastly, twist the pipe as you push it into the connector and stop ONLY when the pipe is tightly fitted into place

Do tankless water heaters need a pressure release valve?

As mentioned earlier also in this post, a pressure release valve is an essential component of a tankless water heater as it allows you to manually release air from the heating chamber in case of filling the chamber with water for the first time, or during periodic maintenance.

In layman's terms, you can consider a pressure relief valve as something similar to an EMERGENCY stop valve that can help you to deal with unprecedented situations effectively.

Mainly, it is designed to offer an escape route for water from the heater if the temperature rises beyond a certain point.

Once the pressure increases above a certain level, it opens the relief valve and water can escape to the exterior.

As a result, the pressure inside the water tank is immediately lowered.

Where should a pressure relief valve be located?

A pressure relief valve is located somewhere near the top of your water heater.

Moreover, the valve comes with a lever that can be lifted up or down.

Also, a discharge pipe is right in the place that runs from the valve straight down to the bottom of your water heater.

What is the disadvantage of not having a pressure relief valve?

In the absence of a pressure relief valve, your water heater will be at a high risk of getting exploded in case, the pressure or temperature exceeds the limits that your tank was designed to handle.

How do I know if my pressure relief valve is bad?

Whether you're a first-time buyer or a seasoned professional, you can easily find out if your pressure relief valve is bad or NOT by CHECKING for the below-mentioned signals.

  • Low or fluctuating water pressure
  • Negligible or no water pressure
  • Hammering or vibrating noises
  • High water pressure

How often should pressure relief valves be replaced?

We suggest you should replace the pressure relief valve post 5 years from the date of manufacturing.

What are the signs of a pressure relief valve failure?

  • Your system can't reach pressure
  • Also, in the case of your system being over maximum pressure
  • There is a leakage in your pressure relief valve or it has NO pressure
